Quick Facts:
|
|
| Hill
Country CARES serves Kerr, Kendall, Gillespie and Bandera counties. We promote
healthy relationships and seek to prevent family violence, sexual crimes, abuse
and neglect by working with people at high risk of victimization and the perpetrators
themselves. Several divisions of HC CARES services fall under our umbrella: |
|
Myth
1: Hill Country CARES primary mission is to operate the emergency shelter
for women and children.
Truth: While the
emergency shelter is one of our oldest continuously operating services, many
more of our resources are devoted to working with individuals and families
throughout the Hill Country. We provide outreach services in Boerne, Bandera,
Pipe Creek, Fredericksburg as well as Kerrville.
Myth 2: Hill Country
CARES works with low income families because they have higher rates of family
violence and sexual assault.
Truth: All victim
and prevention services are free, with no income test for eligibility, because
family violence and sexual assault are in fact equal opportunity crimes that
affect persons at all income levels, all cultures, and all education levels.
Cost need never be a barrier to receive the specialized services from our
experienced staff. And by not charging fees, we can often provide critical
intervention and assistance before the situation reaches a crisis level leading
to long-term damage or even death.
Myth 3: Hill Country
CARES works only with women.
Truth: Both women
and men in the Hill Country are victims of family violence, sexual assault,
abuse and neglect. The stigma for men, however, from such intimate crimes
is an even greater reluctance to report these crimes and to seek help. Hill
Country CARES employs male and female advocates and volunteers to reach all
persons in need. We also work with some 17,000 school children each year in
the classroom, providing prevention and education services to address problems
of child abuse, internet risks, bullying, school violence, sexual harassment
and dating violence.

|
 |
|
Kid
CARES-
providing prevention programs with kids in area schools and trainings for faculty
and staff, hopefully moving one step closer to preventing our kids in our communities
from becoming the next generation of abusers and victims. |
|
 |
|

in both areas of mental health and chemical dependency through education, support,
and developing an attitude of responsibility for self- management. |
|
 |
|

diseases such as Alzheimer’s, diabetes, dementias, etc. offering support groups,
